IMF: Tensions in Sino-US trade relations pose risks to the global economy
Sputnik News, Washington, October 15 - IMF Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas said on October 14 that the current tensions in Sino-US trade relations pose a risk of negative impact on global economic growth.
Gourinchas commented to journalists at a press briefing on the recent deterioration of relations between Washington and Beijing on trade issues, saying, "This could affect the outlook for global economic growth. The current situation is obviously unstable with much speculation, which will not enter our base forecast... it is largely a downside risk."
Gourinchas added that the statements released by both countries last week "have made everyone feel that trade uncertainty still exists."
China began charging special port fees to American vessels on Tuesday, October 14. The Chinese Ministry of Transport emphasized that this is a retaliatory measure against the United States' additional port service fees on Chinese vessels. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce had warned the United States in April that if the US imposed taxes on Chinese-made vessels, the Chinese government would take retaliatory measures.
US President Trump stated on October 10 that the US would impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods from November 1 or earlier, claiming that this was due to China's "aggressive stance" in trade.
