Vladimir Nezhdanov, an expert at the Institute of Contemporary International Problems of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, said in an interview with Sputnik News that the meeting between China and U.S. President Trump indicates both countries are committed to avoiding conflict and seeking a state of "managed competition."
"This is an attempt to establish a situation of managed competition. During the talks, both sides discussed the establishment of communication channels," said Nezhdanov.
"For this reason, both sides emphasized the necessity of stable development in their relations. It is also noteworthy that China mentioned the concept of the 'Thucydides Trap' during the talks. A major outcome of this meeting was laying the foundation for the architecture of 'managed competition.'
Nezhdanov believes that the current situation between the U.S. and China is one of "equal contestation."
He concluded: "In the future, the U.S. may seek a 'super deal' covering trade, economy, and geopolitical aspects, which could play a significant role. Perhaps such a strategy might involve one side making concessions on one issue, while the other makes concessions on another, ultimately reaching a compromise at some point in the middle."
On the morning of May 14, 2026, China held talks with U.S. President Trump in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, during his state visit to China. China emphasized that it is committed to the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of Sino-U.S. relations. Both China and President Trump agreed to define the new orientation of Sino-U.S. relations as building a "constructive strategic stability relationship," providing strategic guidance for Sino-U.S. relations over the next three years and beyond. We believe this will be welcomed by the people of both countries and the international community. 'Constructive strategic stability' should be positive stability based on cooperation, benign stability characterized by moderate competition, normal stability with controllable differences, and enduring stability with prospects for peace. The 'constructive strategic stability relationship' between China and the U.S. is not just a slogan—it should be actions taken in mutual direction.
