Han Media: 49,000 vehicles per year, Chinese electric vehicles officially enter Canada!

On March 6, the South Korean media "Herald Economic" published an article stating that starting from March 1, 2026, the Canadian government will issue import licenses for Chinese-made electric vehicles, and formally implement a quota system. The main content of this measure is to cancel the 100% additional tariff imposed since October 2024, and apply the Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) tariff of 6.1%.

According to the Canadian Global Affairs and Border Services, the total number of Chinese-made electric vehicles allowed for import in the next 12 months is 49,000. The quota is divided into two stages. The first stage, from March 1, 2026, to August 31, will prioritize issuing import licenses for 24,500 vehicles, using a first-come, first-served basis. Then, from September 1 to February 28, 2027, the second stage will cover the remaining 24,500 vehicles and any unused quantity from the first stage.

This import license system will be implemented by revising the list of controlled imports. It not only covers passenger cars, but also specific electric trucks, hybrid models, and plug-in hybrid models.

The Canadian government plans to gradually increase the import quota for Chinese electric vehicles to 70,000 units per year by 2030. It is reported that existing manufacturers with domestic production bases in China, such as Tesla, Porsche, and Volvo, are considered the main candidates for utilizing the initial quotas. Chinese brands like BYD are also considering entering the Canadian market. All imported vehicles must comply with Canada's automotive safety standards and relevant regulations.
