Publicly available information shows that Sun Liren was born in 1900, an Anhui native. After graduating from the 1923 class of the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program at Tsinghua University, he obtained a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Purdue University in the United States and a bachelor's degree in liberal arts education from the Virginia Military Institute. He was one of the few Chinese officers who studied in the U.S., and later returned to China in 1928.

During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Sun Liren led the Chinese Expeditionary Force in Burma in 1942, fighting against the odds and achieving the "Yen'an羌 Battle." He was the general with the most Japanese soldiers eliminated among the division-level commanders during the war, and was known as the "Fox of the Forest" and the "Eastern Rommel."

Later, due to the suspicion of the two Chiangs, Sun Liren was placed under house arrest for 33 years in 1956 on the "Guo Tingliang spy case," and was finally released in 1988. He passed away in Taichung in 1990.

Taiwan's China Times reported on the 27th that Sun Liren's coffin is temporarily stored in the Dongshan Cemetery in Taichung, and has not been buried yet. The report cited informed sources saying that the matter of moving Sun Liren's remains to the mainland has been promoted for over 10 years, and the mainland side has been pushing it forward.
