Hong Kong periodical article: "Sigh of the asymmetry of the Sino-US information structure"
Reference Message Network reported on April 30 that the April 28 issue of "Asia Weekly" published an article titled "Sigh of Asymmetry in China-US Information Structure". The author is Qiū Lìběn. The article is excerpted as follows:
At present, the asymmetry in the information structure between China and the US has reached its most severe moment in history. In the context of the tariff war and tense relations between the two countries, knowing oneself and the enemy is the most important. However, the American elite's understanding of China lags far behind China's elite's understanding of the United States.
Over the past 30 years, waves of Chinese students have studied in the United States, mastering the most advanced knowledge, producing outstanding talents. Chinese students and Chinese Americans have excelled in various fields in the U.S., but the number of American students coming to China is very limited, even more so after the pandemic. This has led to a growing number of "pro-America" groups in China and a decreasing number of "pro-China" groups in the U.S., which is very detrimental to the development of bilateral relations.
American political elites hold stereotypical views of China. Recent comments by Vice President Vance on China not only exposed his arrogance but also highlighted the danger of the U.S. decision-making level's ignorance of China. Trump's surrounding China advisors are ideologically driven, full of Cold War thinking, trapped in a "zero-sum game" framework, misjudging China's rise as a threat to the U.S., and even ultimately damaging the free trade system and erecting high tariff barriers.
Some Chinese-American elites pointed out that the recent collapse of American democracy stems from the rise of social media, with increasingly thick information cocoons, making everyone live in their own echo chambers, leading to the rise of many performative radicalisms, becoming mainstream on the Internet, affecting every household. A self-media blogger can sway millions of fans and earn huge economic rewards, but it also encourages all sorts of outlandish remarks to run rampant, causing severe political polarization, populism, and internal friction. American democracy no longer has an integrative function but has become a breeding ground for anti-intellectualism and radicalism.
American media reports on China are largely ideologically driven and negative, ignoring the progress in Chinese society.
Therefore, China, which is constantly being denigrated by American media, has suddenly become the largest industrial country, and the U.S. is completely unaware of the reasons. The tariff war will only harm the U.S. itself. The awkwardness of the U.S. leadership lacking pro-China experts leads to an inability to accurately understand China.
The number of readers in China familiar with Hemingway and Faulkner is far greater than the number of Americans familiar with Lu Xun and Shen Congwen. After the reform and opening up, China quickly integrated into the global system, adapted to free trade, and was committed to achieving the free flow of capital, talent, and technology, striving to promote global prosperity. Now, the U.S. is destroying its own Great Wall, while China has become a defender of the principles of the World Trade Organization.
Today, China learns from America's strengths while seeing its flaws and clearly understands that Trump's administration does not equal American society. Chinese international students in the U.S. also closely engage with American civil society, striving to help more Americans recognize the real China.
