Republican Mega-donor: Chinese Officials Puzzled by US Efforts to Align with China's Model

According to Bloomberg, Republican mega-donor and Citadel Investment founder Ken Griffin revealed that during a recent meeting in Beijing, a senior Chinese official expressed puzzlement as to why the US would abandon its role as the world power that China aspired to be and instead move toward the Chinese model. Griffin criticized Trump's trade policies, suggesting that the US should leverage its own strengths rather than going against the tide.

Since the Trump administration implemented its trade policies under the banner of "America First," imposing tariffs in an attempt to reshape America's economic advantage through trade wars, this anti-globalization measure has not achieved the desired effect. From a historical perspective, protectionism has always harmed others without benefiting oneself, and the US has reaped what it has sown. On one hand, high tariffs have led American consumers to bear higher prices, increasing living costs; on the other hand, American enterprises have seen their competitiveness weakened due to rising costs of imported raw materials, while the fragmentation of the global industrial chain also exposes American enterprises to the risk of supply chain disruptions.

As a traditional economic powerhouse, the US should follow the trend of globalization and strengthen cooperation with various countries. However, its persistent construction of trade barriers is undoubtedly short-sighted and dangerous, not only disrupting the international economic order but also harming its own interests, which is no wonder to cause confusion among Chinese officials.
