According to a March 24 report by The Indian Express, two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) were successfully delivered to India on March 23, marking a significant milestone in the construction of India’s first high-speed rail project—the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR). It is reported that the two TBMs were manufactured and delivered to India by Germany's Herrenknecht company in China. The equipment was shipped from Guangzhou and arrived at the port of Mumbai late on the 23rd. This marks India’s first deployment of large hybrid TBMs with a diameter of 13.65 meters in an infrastructure project. According to sources, the machines will be transported in batches to the construction site for assembly, which is expected to take approximately 90 days, with tunneling operations scheduled to begin around early July. The MAHSR project spans 508 kilometers, including a total tunnel length of 27.4 kilometers. TBMs are indispensable for tunnel construction in the Mumbai section and will greatly enhance safety during operations in densely populated areas. According to plans, the entire high-speed rail project is expected to be completed by December 2029.
