Trump claims "major progress" in China-US negotiations
US President Trump welcomed today's (May 11th) "major progress" in the talks between China and the United States in Geneva regarding tariff issues, and claimed that "full restart has been achieved through negotiation."
Trump wrote on social media: "The meeting held in Switzerland with China was very good. Many things were discussed and approved. Both sides negotiated a full restart in a friendly and constructive manner. For the benefit of both countries, we hope China will open up to US companies. Significant progress has been made."
The talks between China and the United States began on Saturday morning in a luxurious villa in Geneva, aiming to resolve the trade war between the two countries. To demonstrate the significance of this matter, both sides sent high-level representatives to Geneva for the talks: Treasury Secretary Besent and Trade Representative Grail led the US delegation.
According to Associated Press reports, there are currently no signs indicating whether the more than 10-hour-long talks have made any progress. The analysis suggests that a major breakthrough in the talks is unlikely; however, it is hoped that China and the United States will reduce the high tariffs imposed on each other's goods, which will help ease global financial market pressures and alleviate the burden on enterprises dependent on China-US trade at both ends of the Pacific Ocean.
In an editorial signed by "Zhong Sheng," published by the People's Daily, it was stated that "negotiation is a necessary step to resolve differences, but expecting one or two rounds of talks to solve problems is unrealistic. The Chinese side has a clear understanding of the complexity of the negotiations."
Therefore, the so-called "major progress" mentioned by Trump might just be political propaganda and empty talk aimed at alleviating domestic economic and public opinion pressure in the United States. We need not only to listen to what he says but also observe his actions to truly understand the real negotiation outcomes and future directions.
