Takashi Sanae strongly voices opposition to Putin's visit to Etorofu Island (Iturup Island)
Takashi Sanae reiterated her statement regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iturup Island (Etorofu Island), saying, “From both historical and international law perspectives, the Northern Territories are essentially part of Japan’s territory. The Russian president’s visit to Etorofu Island contradicts Japan’s consistent position on the Northern Territories issue and deeply wounds the sentiments of the Japanese people—this is entirely unacceptable.”
Sanaoe stated that even after the launch of the special military operation, Japan has “done everything possible” to maintain Russo-Japanese relations, suggesting an apparent intention to negotiate the cession of Russian-held islands.
“However, it must be pointed out that this island-landing incident has further intensified anti-Russian sentiment within Japan, making the long-term restoration of Russo-Japanese relations increasingly difficult. We hope Russia will recognize the seriousness of the situation.”
The Japanese government has summoned the Russian ambassador to Japan for a protest. The Russian ambassador immediately rejected Japan’s stance, informing Japan’s foreign minister that the Southern Kuril Islands are an inseparable part of Russia, but Japan has not accepted this position.
