According to the advisory council, Lee Hae-jun had gone to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to attend a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Regional Guidance Committee of the advisory council. On the 23rd, he suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized. He passed away at around 2:48 p.m. local time on the 25th. Lee Hae-jun had undergone a coronary stent procedure for a heart attack, but his condition did not improve, and he eventually died tragically.

The advisory council stated that it is currently communicating and coordinating with the family and relevant institutions regarding the repatriation of Lee Hae-jun's body and funeral arrangements.

Lee Hae-jun was elected as a member of parliament seven times and was regarded as a "political mentor" of President Yoon Suk-yeol. He served as the 34th Prime Minister of South Korea from 2004 to 2006, and was appointed as Vice Chairman (Deputy Chair) of the Democratic Peace and Unification Advisory Council in October last year.
