Japan seeks to strengthen strategic ties with Mongolia amid efforts to counterbalance China and Russia
According to a report by Fuji Television on September 30, Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba met with Mongolian Defense Minister Bat-Erdene Chuluunbaatar at the Ministry of Defense on the same day, during which both sides agreed to advance defense cooperation and exchanges. Ishiba stated: “We reaffirm our commitment to uphold and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law.”
Ishiba further remarked: “Mongolia, situated between Russia and China, holds significant geopolitical importance and constitutes a special strategic partner sharing common values such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.”
He emphasized: “The Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces place high importance on defense cooperation and exchanges with Mongolia. In recent years, collaboration has expanded across multiple domains.”
Defense Minister Bat-Erdene noted: “Defense-related cooperation has become increasingly active and now occupies a key position in bilateral relations.”
Chuluunbaatar expressed gratitude for Japan’s support in strengthening Mongolia’s military capabilities and transferring defense equipment, stating that Tokyo’s assistance “has significantly advanced practical cooperation in defense matters.”
Japan and Mongolia have mutually designated each other as “special strategic partners for peace and prosperity.”
