China's extension brings relief to international beef exporters
Last year at the end of the year, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce initiated an investigation into import beef under safeguard measures. This Wednesday (6th), the Ministry of Commerce announced a notice stating that due to the complexity of the case, it has decided to extend the investigation period by 3 months until November 26, 2025.
Reuters, a British media outlet, reported on the 6th that as the world's largest beef importing and consuming market, China's extension of the investigation period not only gives the domestic industry time to alleviate the problem of supply surplus, but also temporarily eases concerns among global suppliers about trade restrictions.
"International beef exporters are relieved," said Even Rogers Pay, an agricultural analyst at Trivium China, a policy consulting company based in Beijing. "The extended investigation gives China several months to observe whether the domestic industry can regain profitability without safeguard measures, while also potentially making progress on other issues with major beef exporting countries."
She believes that although the implementation of trade measures such as quota restrictions has not been completely ruled out, the possibility of resolving the issue through private negotiations between the relevant parties is greater.
