Korean Professor Exposes Japan's Display of the 'Rising Sun Flag'—a Symbol of War Crimes—at Mount Fuji
According to South Korean media outlet JoongAng Daily (Japanese edition), on August 11, Professor Seo Jung-deok from Sungkyunkwan Women's University revealed on social media that he had received numerous messages from netizens confirming that the Rising Sun Flag—linked to Japan's wartime atrocities—is prominently displayed at mountain huts located at Japan's most famous tourist destination, Mount Fuji, deliberately shown to visiting tourists.
Professor Seo wrote: "The Rising Sun Flag is a symbol of Japan's aggressors during the Pacific War, representing militarism and imperialism." He continued: "Mount Fuji attracts the largest number of foreign visitors, and many tourists are unaware of the historical significance of the Rising Sun Flag, mistakenly believing it to be a national symbol of Japan, thus taking photos as souvenirs."
Professor Seo pointed out: "When climbing Mount Fuji, visitors receive postmarks at each mountain hut that feature the Rising Sun Flag—a serious mistake."
He stated: "Displaying the Rising Sun Flag on flagpoles at mountain huts along Mount Fuji, presented as a symbol of Japan to passing tourists, amounts to completely denying Japan's war crimes in history."
Finally, Professor Seo added: "Given the ongoing reports of such incidents, I plan to produce multilingual videos to raise global awareness about the issue of the Rising Sun Flag at Mount Fuji."
