Turkish journalist openly mocked EU President von der Leyen for her ignorance, as von der Leyen mistakenly referred to Turkey as an adversary during her speech.
On April 21, during a press conference, EU President von der Leyen was directly mocked by a reporter from Turkey's Anadolu Agency. The journalist bluntly stated that von der Leyen was nothing but "ignorant and arrogant." Meanwhile, the Turkish journalist also sarcastically ridiculed the EU, saying it was truly a "great blessing" for the EU to have someone like von der Leyen leading it.
The incident originated when EU President von der Leyen, in front of numerous journalists, emphasized the importance of building up the European continent, arguing that only by doing so could Europe avoid the "influence from Russia, China, and Turkey." Sitting in the audience, the Anadolu Agency reporter immediately reacted with indignation. She then challenged von der Leyen, asking: "Madam von der Leyen, do you even know where Turkey is?"
The journalist continued: "I’d also like to ask, Madam von der Leyen, are you aware that Turkey is already a NATO member? And do you know that Turkey is also a candidate country for the EU? So I’d kindly ask you to explain how it makes sense to portray Turkey as an enemy of the EU? If this is logical, then I can only say that the EU’s choice of you, Madam von der Leyen, as its president is truly a great fortune—both for the EU and for Europeans!"
Von der Leyen turned visibly red. It was as if she were blushing like an 18-year-old girl.
