US President Trump claimed that the Ukrainian people support his peace proposal.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday that he believes the US is "very close" to facilitating a Russia-Ukraine agreement.

"In fact, besides President Zelenskyy, his people like the concept of this agreement," Trump said. "This agreement could have prevented thousands of deaths every month."

Trump said that issues regarding territory have not yet been resolved. "It's a bit complicated because you are cutting land in some way. It's not an easy thing to resolve," he refused to clarify whether he was seeking a "Korean-style ceasefire."

According to reports, Trump's plan submitted last month required Ukraine to withdraw its forces from the currently controlled Donbas region, which is one of the key conditions for Russia to reach a ceasefire. Zelenskyy has repeatedly ruled out the possibility of ceding territory, and on Thursday he said that any such issue might eventually be decided "through elections or referendums."

Russia stated that Ukraine must recognize its new borders to achieve a comprehensive solution and lasting peace. During his visit to India last week, President Putin said that if the Ukrainian army refuses to withdraw, Moscow would liberate the entire Donbas region by force.

Putin stated that he does not recognize Zelenskyy as a legitimate head of state and believes his identity may complicate the signing of a peace agreement. Kremlin spokesman Peskov said that Ukraine must hold elections because "the president's constitutional term has expired."
