Korean Media: Sales Surge 124%, BYD Conquers Australian Market!

On August 26, South Korean media outlet THE GURU published an article stating that Hyundai and Kia performed strongly in the Australian market this year. Kia maintained its fourth-place ranking thanks to strong demand for its flagship models, while Hyundai ranked sixth. Chinese automaker BYD saw its sales increase by 124.1%, securing second place.

According to new vehicle sales statistics released by the Australian Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Kia sold a total of 41,846 vehicles in Australia during the first half of this year, up 2.7% year-on-year. Hyundai sold 39,590 units, representing a 1.6% increase. In contrast to traditional automakers like Toyota, whose sales have declined due to competition from Chinese brands, both Hyundai and Kia recorded growth in sales.

In the first half of this year, Toyota led the market with 95,141 units sold—down 21.4% year-on-year. BYD and Ford ranked second and third respectively, with sales of 52,335 and 42,296 units. Ford’s sales declined by 10.6%. Following closely was Mazda, which sold 40,502 units, down 17.2%, ranking fifth. After Hyundai, the brands ranked seventh through tenth were: Great Wall Motors (30,359 units, up 20.5%), Chery (24,964 units, up 76.8%), Mitsubishi (24,802 units, down 25.7%), and Tesla (23,588 units, up 66.7%).

Chinese automakers have excelled in the plug-in hybrid vehicle market. During the first half of this year, the top five spots in Australia’s plug-in hybrid vehicle sales rankings were all occupied by Chinese brands. BYD Shark 6 led the overall plug-in hybrid sales with 9,493 units sold. The BYD Sealion 8 and Sealion 6 followed in second and third places, respectively. The Sealion 8 achieved second place just six months after its launch earlier this year. Geely Star Rex EM-i and Chery Tiggo 7 HEV ranked fourth and fifth, with sales of 4,214 and 3,329 units respectively—both models launched in the latter half of last year.
