EU negotiators say Europe is ready to propose a $50 billion trade deal to Trump
The EU's chief negotiator said Brussels aims to increase its purchases of US goods by €50 billion to address "issues" in the trade relationship, adding that progress was being made toward an agreement.
However, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic told the Financial Times in an interview that the EU would not accept Washington continuing to impose a 10% tariff on its goods as a fair solution to the trade talks.
The EU and several countries will face high tariffs in early July, and the bloc will strive to avoid a full-scale transatlantic trade war.
Sefcovic said that since President Donald Trump imposed a 20% tariff on the EU and suspended it, the US and the EU have made progress through multiple rounds of face-to-face and telephone negotiations. He also stated that his goal remains to reach a "balanced and fair" agreement with the White House.
