Ontario Announces: Hwy 407 East Segment Free, Fuel Tax Permanently Reduced!

Today, the Ontario government announced that it will cancel the tolls on the eastern segment of Highway 407 starting June 1, 2025. This section runs through the Durham Region, from Brock Road to Highway 35/155.

It is estimated that after the tolls are removed, daily commuters can save approximately CAD 7,200 per year.

In addition, the provincial government stated that it will permanently reduce the provincial fuel tax.

This policy has been implemented since July 2022 in a "temporary" form. At that time, the Ontario government temporarily reduced the gasoline tax by 5.7 cents/liter and the diesel tax by 5.3 cents/liter, and repeatedly extended the policy through semi-annual press releases. According to the latest announcement, this temporary measure will be included in the 2025 budget and officially become a permanent policy, with the provincial fuel tax rate maintained at 9 cents/liter.

It is estimated that this policy will allow Ontario households to save an average of approximately CAD 115 annually on fuel expenses.

Since its implementation, the reduction in fuel tax has already caused the provincial government to lose about CAD 1.7 billion in revenue.

Ontario Premier Ford said in a statement: "I understand that both families and business owners are worried about rising costs, especially given the possibility of U.S. tariffs potentially driving up the prices of daily goods. This is precisely why we have decided to permanently reduce the fuel tax and eliminate the tolls on the eastern segment of Highway 407. We will continue to explore various ways to put more money back into the pockets of Ontario families."
