Sputnik News, The Hague, January 26th - NATO Secretary General Rutte said in an interview with the Dutch newspaper Financial Daily that Europe can never exist independently of the United States.

When asked whether Europe could one day no longer need the United States, Rutte replied: "In my view, it will never happen. History has bound us closely together. The American nuclear umbrella is a cornerstone of our security."

According to him, European countries still have serious shortcomings in defense spending.

Rutte emphasized: "If anyone thinks 'we can do without the United States in the short term,' this idea must be completely abandoned."
