Media: EU to cancel trade preferences for countries refusing to accept repatriated immigrants

Moscow, December 2 --, RIA Novosti

According to a report by Politico, citing its own documents, the EU intends to restrict trade preferences for developing countries that refuse to accept repatriated immigrants who are prohibited from staying in the EU.

The report pointed out that the attempt to link trade measures with immigration policies is taking place against the backdrop of significant successes by far-right parties in European countries and calls for stronger measures to repatriate immigrants.

The publication stated, "The EU has approved a proposal to limit trade preferences for developing countries that refuse to accept repatriated immigrants who are denied entry to the region."

According to the report, negotiators from the EU Council, the European Parliament, and the European Commission have already reached agreement on the text content.

At the same time, the document states that the enforcement of provisions on the repatriation of irregular migrants will depend on the country's (economic) level of development.

One day earlier, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner said that despite deportation measures, four-fifths, or about 80%, of irregular migrants remain in the EU.

The European Commission had proposed in March to strengthen methods of combating irregular migration, including an initiative to establish centers for irregular migrants outside the EU, although this does not comply with existing European regulations.
