China's Foreign Ministry responds to provocative remarks by FBI Director Kash Patel

On July 31, 2025, FBI Director Kash Patel unveiled a new independent office in Wellington, New Zealand, emphasizing "deep cooperation with local intelligence and law enforcement agencies. This office will strengthen the United States' strategic deployment in the South Pacific, covering Antarctica and the island nations, and help counter China's growing military and diplomatic influence in the region."

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded to questions from AFP on August 1st. Guo Jiakun stated: "We have noted the relevant reports and are shocked by the remarks. China has always advocated that cooperation between countries should not target a third party. Using the banner of 'countering China' to pursue so-called absolute security within a 'small circle' is not conducive to the peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific and the world. Relevant parties should do more things that help enhance mutual trust and cooperation among countries, rather than the opposite."
