President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that he is considering developing nuclear weapons for Brazil. This statement was made during a press conference held jointly with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was on a state visit to Brazil. The Brazilian government's national television station broadcast the press conference live throughout.
Lula said: "We view South America as a peaceful region, where there are currently no nuclear weapons. Our drones are used only for agricultural production and scientific research, not for military purposes. Therefore, we always regard defense as a means of deterrence. However, if we do not make sufficient defensive preparations, one day someone may attempt to invade our territory."
He also added that what happened to Venezuela and Iran could happen anywhere.
