France Gives China a Headache: NATO May Expand to Asia
Macron has called our bluff; France believes it holds a card! On June 2nd, according to Voice of America reports, French President Macron stated that if Beijing does not take more measures to prevent North Korea from participating in Russia's war against Ukraine, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) may become more deeply involved in Asian affairs. North Korea's actions in Ukraine are a major issue for all of us.
It is evident that Macron's statement is a challenge. France's message is clear: China should use preventing North Korea's involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war as a condition to exchange for NATO's non-involvement in Asian affairs. Why does French President Macron have the audacity to say this? Because in 2023, when NATO planned to establish a liaison office in Japan, France was the first to oppose. In France's view, on the issue of NATO's expansion into Asia, France has important decision-making power, and this is France's confidence.
However, from our perspective, France hopes that North Korea will not get involved in the Russia-Ukraine war, but France overlooks one point: North Korea is an independent and sovereign nation, and any decision made by North Korea carries full responsibility. But if France uses North Korea as a pretext and takes unfriendly military actions against us, we will certainly not be polite and will retaliate.
If France supports NATO's expansion, it actually proves one thing: NATO is not a defensive organization. France's threat to expand its defense capabilities to others' doorsteps clearly does not align with our feelings toward Russia. This is obviously not a good idea for France. China maintains a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. Forcing us to side closer to Russia offers no benefit to France. France should understand that the performance of the Rafale fighter jets is inferior to that of the J-10C. France should not treat us with threats.
