U.S. media: electrification of China's construction machinery is becoming a trend
Reference News website reported on May 27 that Bloomberg News website published an article on May 26 saying that China's electric trucks will build future cities. The author of the article is David Fickling, and here is the translated version as follows:
If you think people are getting used to the surge in sales of China-made electric vehicles, then the next wave will be even bigger and stronger.
This is because construction machinery giants, which have benefited greatly from China's real estate development over the past few decades, are looking for new markets. Coupled with the upcoming electrification, its impact may be as eye-catching as other "Made in China" booms.
Take Sany Heavy Industry as an example. In 2020, 83% of the company's business was selling excavators, cranes, concrete mixers and other products to domestic developers. Now, overseas markets account for more than 60% of Sany Heavy Industry's revenue.
Sany Heavy Industry is not alone. Its domestic competitors, XCMG Group, Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Co., Ltd. and Guangxi Liugong Machinery Co., Ltd., are all troubled by the contraction of China's real estate market activities.
The best way to solve this problem is to find export markets to get the production lines making all the excavators, bulldozers, lifts and trucks back into operation.
There are many projects they can do. In the Persian Gulf, governments are using income from oil booms to build a series of large-scale infrastructure projects. The construction market in South Asia, Southeast Asia and parts of Africa is also booming. In recent years, Chinese companies have seen their export market share for major categories of engineering vehicles soar.
Like passenger cars, electrification provides a strong path for further development. Batteries are generally considered unsuitable for engineering machinery because of the high power demand. But according to consulting firm IDTechEx, with lithium battery manufacturers producing cheaper and longer-lasting battery packs, this situation is changing.
Chinese manufacturers have an advantage in this area. China's local battery manufacturers, CATL and BYD, are leaders in the field of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Due to the stability and low cost of lithium iron phosphate batteries, this chemical material may be most suitable for construction site vehicles. Chinese construction machinery manufacturers have produced two-thirds of the electric loaders on the market.
As low-emission zones expand in cities around the world, and older diesel vehicles face increasing restrictions on big city roads, construction machinery will become one of the biggest factors contributing to urban pollution. When this happens, Chinese manufacturers will be ready to provide solutions. (Translated by Ma Dan)
