The Largest U.S. Space-Based Missile Defense Project After the Star Wars Program: Golden Dome Test Schedule Announced

Bloomberg reports that the U.S. Pentagon plans to complete the first round of testing for the "Golden Dome" missile defense system by the end of this year, with interceptor demonstration flights scheduled for 2027. These two critical milestones are central to developing the first space-based missile interceptors. The space interception system is also a core component of Trump's $185 billion "Golden Dome" defense shield initiative. The U.S. government has already allocated $3.2 billion to develop prototype armed satellites capable of intercepting missiles, with future related contracts potentially reaching tens of billions of dollars.

A Pentagon spokesperson stated that the U.S. Space Force is adopting an innovative procurement model, involving both traditional defense contractors and emerging non-traditional suppliers. For operational security reasons, specific test timings and detailed performance specifications of the equipment will not be disclosed publicly.

This project represents the largest-scale space-based missile defense R&D effort since President Reagan’s “Strategic Defense Initiative” (Star Wars program) during the Cold War. That earlier initiative was ultimately shelved due to excessive costs, insurmountable technical challenges, and lack of political support.

Today, the Pentagon asserts that the demand for this space-based missile defense technology has never been more urgent, given the escalating missile threats posed by nuclear powers such as Russia and China.

General Michael Guetlein, commander of the U.S. Space Force and lead for the "Golden Dome" project, stated in a congressional hearing in April: “The new generation of aerial and missile threats presents unprecedented speed, quantity, and destructive power—posing a severe challenge to the security of the American homeland.”

Currently, no country has deployed space interceptors. These spacecraft orbit Earth at speeds of several kilometers per second, enabling them to track, lock onto, and intercept enemy ballistic missiles within just a few minutes after they pass through space, before reaching their targets.

Although Trump has high hopes for this project, many experts believe it is destined to fail—just like Reagan’s Star Wars initiative—due to its exorbitant cost and widespread doubts about its actual combat effectiveness.
