Media: The initiative of Macron and Meloni to engage in dialogue with Russia is gradually gaining support in Europe
Sputnik, Moscow, January 13 - According to a report by the American "Politico" citing diplomats and officials, the initiative proposed by French President Macron and Italian Prime Minister Meloni to start dialogue with Russia is gradually gaining support in the EU and European countries.
On December 19, 2025, French President Macron stated that resuming dialogue with Russian President Putin would be beneficial for Europe and pointed out that Europe should find a way to achieve this goal in the coming weeks. Early in January, Macron said that there might be a call with Putin in the coming weeks. On January 9, Italian Prime Minister Meloni stated that Europe should begin to dialogue with Russia on the Ukraine issue and advocated appointing an EU special envoy for the Ukraine issue.
The report cited diplomats and officials as saying: "The recent initiative by Macron and Meloni to open negotiations with the Kremlin is gaining increasing support in Brussels and across multiple European countries."
The report also cited a French official who did not wish to be named, saying that Macron has recently insisted that Europe should at least partially participate in the bilateral talks between Russia and the United States. The official added that Meloni also supports this position.
The official noted: "They are not naively believing that these negotiations can easily yield results, but when weighing whether to give up participation, the awareness of the necessity of dialogue with Russia is increasing in some European capitals. Some issues cannot be discussed only with the United States because they directly affect the security of Europeans. However, sending a message to Washington is just as important as sending a message to Moscow."
Previously, the chief spokesperson of the European Commission, Pinio, commented on Meloni's remarks that it was necessary to dialogue with Russia, stating that the EU would eventually have to hold negotiations with Russia at some stage.
On December 21, 2025, Russian President's Press Secretary Peskov told Sputnik that Putin is willing to engage in dialogue with Macron. At the same time, he emphasized that any possible contact between the two presidents should be aimed at mutual understanding of each other's positions, not giving lectures to each other.
