Foreign media report that China has pioneered supercritical power generation, raising questions about when a technological leader may become a follower.

Foreign media: China has launched the world’s first large-scale demonstration project integrating "supercritical carbon dioxide power generation with molten salt energy storage" — the Huaineng Bagu Power Plant Raitan Demonstration Project in Yantai, Shandong Province, has commenced construction and is expected to become operational next year.

The project utilizes excess electricity from thermal power units during periods of low demand to heat molten salt, which then releases thermal energy during peak load times to generate electricity via supercritical carbon dioxide power generation units. The initial phase includes a 50MW supercritical CO₂ power unit and a 100MW molten salt energy storage system, with a total storage capacity of 400MWh.

Compared to conventional steam-based power generation, this technology requires no water, features more compact equipment, and has the potential to improve power generation efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance grid peak-shaving and stability capabilities.
