The United States Postal Service (USPS) has proposed a new draft regulation that would allow anyone to mail concealed handguns, such as pistols and revolvers. If adopted, this rule would make it legal for the first time in nearly 100 years to send handguns through the USPS. In 1927, Congress passed a law banning the mailing of concealed firearms via the USPS—except when sent by licensed dealers—to curb crime. In January 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice re-examined the law, concluding that the restriction violated the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and urged the postal system to revise the relevant regulations. Currently, USPS permits the mailing of certain firearms, such as rifles and shotguns, provided they are unloaded and securely packaged. The new rule would impose similar transportation safety requirements on handguns, although handgun designs have significantly evolved since 1927. This week, the attorneys general from 24 Democratic-led states jointly wrote a letter opposing the proposal. The USPS stated it will review public comments received by Monday before finalizing any rule changes.
