The US-Russia tension
Has taken an unusual escalation
US President Donald Trump on Friday local time (1st) clearly warned Russia that he had ordered two American nuclear submarines to change course in response to the comments of the former Russian president on social media.
It is worth noting that this is a rare public escalation between the two nuclear superpowers.
It is currently unclear whether any American submarines have changed their course. The Pentagon has submitted a request to the White House for more information, but the White House has not responded immediately.
Trump made the remarks in response to a post by the former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev cited reports about the Soviet nuclear strategy during the Cold War called "Dead Hand".
This strategy aims to deploy nuclear weapons even if the personnel operating the nuclear weapons are killed in the first strike. The Russian government has not officially confirmed this capability, but in 2011, a retired commander of the Russian strategic missile forces claimed that this capability could be reactivated if needed.
Trump wrote on his social media platform "Truth Social" that Medvedev's comments were "provocative" and said he took this action as a precautionary measure.
On Friday evening, as Trump left Washington to go to the golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey for the weekend, he told reporters at the White House that he viewed Medvedev's comments as a threat.
