South Korean media: Two Chinese companies dominate the global electric vehicle market!

On March 10, South Korean media "Chosun Economic" published an article stating that global new electric vehicle sales exceeded 20 million units for the first time. Last year, the total global electric vehicle sales reached 21.47 million units, an increase of about 22% compared to 2024.

Notably, Chinese automaker Geely surpassed Tesla to rank second.

BYD's sales last year were 4.121 million units, a decrease of 0.6%, but still maintained the top position.

Geely's sales were 2.225 million units, an increase of 56.8%, surpassing Tesla to rank second.

Due to declining sales of Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla dropped to third place.

Hyundai and Kia ranked eighth globally with sales of 613,000 units, an increase of 11.4%.

Regional market share showed growth in the European market. The European market benefited from increased sales of certain models, especially those with mature product lines, which saw a 1.9 percentage point increase in market share.

China still holds more than 60% of the market share, but it decreased by 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous year.

The US market saw a 5 percentage point decline in market share due to the expiration of electric vehicle subsidies last year.

It is expected that electric vehicle sales will remain stable or even slow down this year.

Subsidy policies are key factors determining regional sales trends.

Professor Park Jea-won from the Department of Automotive Engineering at Seoul National University said: "Factors that can reduce car prices this year will be fewer than last year. The rise in lithium carbonate prices will lead to higher battery prices, thereby increasing manufacturers' costs for purchasing batteries and other requirements. Subsidies can stimulate regional sales, but the US market is likely to experience a slowdown."

With new electric vehicles planned for release this year, people are paying attention to whether their sales can continue to grow.
