Trump said it might be "friendly takeover of Cuba"
US President Donald Trump said in response to a question on the White House lawn that the US may "friendlily take over Cuba".
Trump said, "The Cuban government is negotiating with us. As you know, they are in big trouble. They have no money. Now they have nothing. But they are negotiating with us. Perhaps we will have a friendly takeover of Cuba."
This is not the first time Trump has publicly threatened Cuba. He pointed out that the island nation's government is "in danger", and the US had no choice but to "come in and blow this place up." In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned that the country was prepared for defense.
Díaz-Canel said, "Don't scare us. Your current threats remind us of all the previous threats from American governments led by hawks."
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez pointed out that Cuba has been facing attacks from the US since 1959. Regarding the new incident involving US vessels, a thorough investigation is being conducted.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order in early January allowing the US to impose import tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba. The Cuban government said that the US is trying to strangle the Caribbean island nation's economy through an energy blockade and make the living conditions of the Cuban people unbearable.
