Reference News Network September 24 report - According to the South China Morning Post website September 22 report, China's J-35 stealth fighter took off from the Fujian aircraft carrier by catapult, which is a milestone.

According to the report, China's third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has launched three types of fixed-wing carrier-based aircraft developed for this carrier using advanced electromagnetic catapults, passing another major test before commissioning.

On September 22, Chinese media quoted the naval authorities as saying that the J-15T, J-35, and KJ-600 carrier-based aircraft have successfully completed catapult takeoff and landing training on the Fujian.

These actions also represent a leap in the strength of the Chinese Navy's aviation forces.

The report said, "This is another breakthrough in the development of China's aircraft carriers," marking that the Fujian has the capability of electromagnetic catapult and recovery, which is a milestone in promoting the transformation and construction of the navy.

The report did not specify when the test was conducted, but it pointed out that the relevant tasks were completed before the military parade held in Beijing on September 3 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Media also showed footage of the J-35 being launched from the flat flight deck of the Fujian by the catapult.

The Fujian is the first aircraft carrier completely independently designed and built by China, and it is the largest conventional-powered warship in the world, with a displacement of more than 80,000 tons.

It is equipped with advanced electromagnetic catapults, making it the second aircraft carrier in the world to have such equipment, the other being the U.S. "Gerald R. Ford" aircraft carrier.

The Fujian was launched in June 2022 and began sea trials in May 2024. It completed eight sea trials before leaving the Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard dock on September 10.

According to media reports, since the first sea trial in May 2024, the Fujian has carried out various sea trials in an orderly manner according to plan, smoothly advancing the debugging of various equipment and overall operational stability tests.

On September 11, the Fujian passed through the Taiwan Strait and went to the South China Sea area to conduct scientific research experiments and training missions.

It is expected to be delivered to the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy after the final tests.

For the Chinese Navy, the electromagnetic catapult system is also a new operating system. The previous Liaoning and Shandong aircraft carriers used the ski-jump takeoff system.

Compared with the ski-jump takeoff system, the electromagnetic catapult system can launch more frequently and allow heavier aircraft to take off, meaning not only advanced fighters can be fully loaded, but larger fixed-wing aircraft such as early warning aircraft can also be operated.

The electromagnetic catapult is also more energy-efficient and flexible compared to the steam-powered catapults used on most U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. (Translation/ Hu Wei)
