Korean Media: EU Pure Electric Vehicle Sales Exceed Gasoline Vehicles for the First Time!

On February 26, South Korean media "Today's Finance" published an article stating that in December of last year, the sales of pure electric vehicles in the EU exceeded those of gasoline-powered vehicles for the first time.

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), in December last year, pure electric vehicles accounted for 22.6% of total car sales in the EU, exceeding gasoline-powered vehicles (22.5%).

This marked the first time that the market share of pure electric vehicles exceeded that of gasoline vehicles.

Hybrid vehicles had the highest share at 33.7%, while plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 10.7%.

Last year, the overall market share was as follows: hybrid vehicles (34.5%), gasoline vehicles (26.8%), pure electric vehicles (17.4%), plug-in hybrid vehicles (8.4%), diesel vehicles (8.9%), and other types (3.3%).

In 2024, gasoline vehicles had the highest market share at 33.3%, followed by hybrid vehicles (30.9%), pure electric vehicles (13.6%), diesel vehicles (11.9%), plug-in hybrid vehicles (7.2%), and other types (3.1%).

This means that the market share of gasoline vehicles decreased by 6.5 percentage points compared to last year.

In contrast, the shares of pure electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles increased by 3.8 and 3.6 percentage points, respectively.

The growth in the market share of electric vehicles last year was mainly attributed to new models launched by automakers such as Renault, Volkswagen, and BMW.

Last year, Tesla performed poorly in the European electric vehicle market, while Chinese electric vehicle companies such as BYD achieved significant growth.

At the same time, the EU effectively withdrew its plan to completely ban the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles starting from 2035 last November.
