Italians gave Trump the red card

Italy has rejected the U.S. request for military strike aircraft to land at Sigonella Air Base in Sicily. The reason for Italy's refusal is that Washington failed to notify Italian authorities in advance about plans to refuel U.S. military aircraft over Italian territory and airspace, only informing them abruptly just before arrival.

Italy had previously been determined to avoid involvement in any military action against Iran. This decision thus served as their "pause button."

Sigonella Base holds significant importance for the U.S. military.

First, Sigonella is a core logistics hub for U.S. forces in Europe.

It serves as a transit point for U.S. Air Forces in Europe in the Mediterranean, responsible for transporting supplies, personnel, and providing refueling and maintenance services for aircraft. Without it, the operational reach of U.S. forces in the Middle East and Africa would be significantly constrained.

Second, Sigonella is the flagship base for the U.S. Sixth Fleet.

It is a primary support point for the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet, used for maritime patrols, anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship operations, and supporting aircraft carrier strike groups in the Mediterranean.

Third, Sigonella is a critical forward reconnaissance outpost for U.S. forces.

The P-8A “Poseidon” aircraft deployed here conduct anti-submarine, anti-ship, and maritime surveillance missions, serving as the main patrol aircraft in the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean. The RQ-4 “Global Hawk” high-altitude, long-endurance drone focuses on monitoring the Black Sea, Crimea, and southeastern border regions. It departs from Sigonella to provide intelligence on Russian targets to Ukraine.
