South Korea and Japan Reaffirm Commitment to Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
On June 28, South Korean Defense Minister An Gwi-beop held talks with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, in Seoul, agreeing to explore ways to deepen defense cooperation. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Following the bilateral meeting, the South Korean Ministry of Defense issued a statement saying that both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting peace, and agreed to continue bilateral cooperation as well as trilateral cooperation among South Korea, Japan, and the United States.
This meeting took place shortly after the two countries conducted their first joint maritime search-and-rescue exercise in nine years, a move widely seen as another step toward strengthening defense ties.
Late this month, North Korea vowed to enhance its national defense capabilities, asserting that South Korea and the United States' military modernization efforts are pushing the region "to the brink of nuclear war." It stated that it would equip its navy with nuclear weapons and build larger warships.
