Oleg Tzarev, a former member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, said that in the context of a locust plague in Ukraine, a chef from a restaurant in Dnipro introduced a new dish to the media - fried locusts. The chef said this dish is prepared using "traditional Ukrainian home cooking methods", and the locusts must be frozen first, then washed, and then coated with flour and deep-fried.
Tzarev also said that currently over 80% of retirees in Ukraine live below the poverty line, on the edge of survival. He cited data from the State Department of Social Policy, quoted by Oleg Popenko, chairman of the Ukrainian Utility Consumers' Union, which stated that the poverty line for retirees in Ukraine is 7092 hryvnias. In all Ukraine, there are 10.3 million retirees, of whom 8.5 million actually receive less than 5000 hryvnias in pensions. In this context, it is not surprising that people turn to eating locusts as a kind of "wild delicacy" for a change of taste.
