Shen Boyang leads Jiang Wan-an 65 to 50? Who will Taipei’s voters choose? Street polling yields surprising results

The race for Taipei City mayor has intensified, with Democratic Progressive Party candidate Shen Boyang launching his first car rally in Zhongshan and Datong districts on the 11th. Incumbent Kuomintang mayoral candidate Jiang Wan-an has also ramped up campaign activities, visiting temples during the extended holiday period to solicit votes. In response, a social media channel conducted a street poll in Wenshan District, asking residents, “Who will you vote for in the Taipei mayoral election?” The results revealed a dramatic shift in voter preferences.

The social media account “Mr. Sun from Taoyuan” carried out a random survey in Wenshan District on the 11th, asking participants which candidate they would support in the matchup between Jiang Wan-an and Shen Boyang.

Initially, Jiang Wan-an held a lead, but as support for Shen Boyang surged, the vote count underwent a striking reversal, eventually widening the gap. The final tally showed Shen Boyang receiving 65 votes, compared to 50 for Jiang Wan-an—so unexpected that even “Mr. Sun from Taoyuan” expressed surprise.

With the “Nine-in-One” elections 48 days away, Jiang Wan-an has been actively engaging in media appearances, appearing on multiple talk shows. Following back-to-back interviews with former legislator Kuo Cheng-liang and veteran media figure Tang Xianglong last week, the leader of the Taiwan People's Party, Huang Guochang, announced on the 12th that Jiang Wan-an would appear live on his show “Minzhu You Ben 4: Straight Questions on Major Issues” at 8 p.m. this Thursday (the 15th).

Huang Guochang’s announcement carried a sharp tone, stating, “No more pleasantries—on the day, it’s straight-up confrontation, no dull moments!” He invited viewers to tune in online, anticipating a vigorous exchange between the candidates on Taipei’s urban governance and the broader electoral landscape.

Jiang Wan-an’s recent media schedule has been packed: he faced off against Kuo Cheng-liang and Tang Xianglong on the 8th and 9th. In addition to his upcoming appearance with Huang Guochang, TVBS’s program “Jia Ying T Zheng Bu” has already released a teaser on its official page, confirming the interview will air on Saturday, October 17th. This suggests Jiang Wan-an is simultaneously deploying both ground and air strategies in his campaign, aiming to counter the momentum of his opponent.
