Reference News Network, October 21 report - According to Reuters, October 17 report, a defense official responsible for India's indigenous aircraft engine manufacturing project revealed on the 17th that India is expected to spend 654 billion rupees (7.44 billion US dollars) by 2035 to purchase engines for its developing fighter jets.

Ramanan Murti of the Indian Gas Turbine Research Institute said that India will need about 1,100 engines for multiple fighter jet projects at different stages. The institute is a state-owned defense organization.

Due to technical defects, India's decades-long attempt to power the "Light Combat Aircraft" with the domestically developed Kaveri engine has not yet been launched.

Murti said at an event held in New Delhi: "It is necessary to work in mission mode to build an ecosystem for domestic fighter jet engines." He also said that India needs infrastructure, such as an altitude test facility, and an industrial base.

He also said that derivatives of the Kaveri engine can be used for a domestically produced combat drone.

Murti is leading the work on jointly developing an engine with an international partner, trying to provide power for India's first fifth-generation stealth fighter. Companies such as Safran Group of France, Rolls-Royce of the UK, and General Electric of the US have shown interest.

Indian officials previously stated that the prototype of this fighter - called the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft - is expected to be unveiled in 2028. (Translated by Qiu Fang)
