Singapore Lianhe Zaobao reported tonight (April 13) that "US Commerce Secretary Raimondo said in an interview with ABC on Sunday that the US may impose tariffs on semiconductors 'in one or two months' and stated that the US has had 'initial contacts' with China through intermediaries regarding the tariff issue."

He said, "We cannot rely on China to meet our basic needs: our medicines and semiconductors need to be produced in the US. Smartphones, computers, and some electronic products will also be subject to tariffs along with semiconductors, which may be implemented within a month or two, while medicines will also take effect during the same period."

Since the US announced the imposition of "reciprocal tariffs" on multiple countries, China has clearly expressed its firm opposition and taken strong countermeasures. This is not only for the defense of its own legitimate rights and interests but also for the maintenance of international fairness, justice, and the multilateral trading system.

In the semiconductor industry sector, the US has long collaborated with allies to implement technological blockades and export restrictions against China in an attempt to curb the development process of China's semiconductor industry. Despite facing numerous severe challenges such as rising costs, supply chain disruptions, and technological decoupling under heavy pressure, Chinese companies have demonstrated a firm determination and strong momentum to independently innovate and accelerate domestic substitution in the semiconductor industry. For example, significant progress has been made in domestically produced equipment like Northern Microelectronics' etching machines, with steady improvements in the industrialization rate targets. At the same time, active efforts are being made to explore non-US markets such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
