Kyodo News: New Nissan EV may face production cuts before release

Kyodo News, July 9 report, Nissan Motor Company's new all-electric vehicle "Leaf" has been forced to significantly cut production before its release this year, mainly due to China's export control of rare earth elements, leading to a shortage of parts supply. Nissan is implementing large-scale rationalization measures, including cutting 20,000 jobs globally and closing 7 factories, to cope with the sales downturn; the new "Leaf" as a key product, has a range of over 600 kilometers, an increase of 30% compared to the previous model, improved charging performance, and is planned to be launched in the United States in autumn and released in Japan by the end of the year. However, the Tochigi factory has adjusted its production plan and stopped recruiting contract workers, industry insiders pointed out that this move casts a shadow over Nissan's revitalization plan to get rid of heavy losses, and the low factory utilization rate has been exacerbated by the poor sales of other models.
