Reference News, July 10 report. According to Reuters, on July 10, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, survived a vote of no confidence in the European Parliament, which was mainly initiated by far-right MPs, accusing von der Leyen and her team of illegal activities that undermined trust in the EU.
As expected, the motion did not receive the two-thirds majority required for passage. Only 175 members of parliament supported the motion, 360 voted against it, and 18 abstained.
The main sponsor of the motion, Romanian right-wing MP Gheorghe Pîrlea, had previously criticized the European Commission for refusing to disclose text messages between von der Leyen and the CEO of Pfizer during the pandemic.
Although the motion failed, this remains a politically troublesome issue for von der Leyen.
This is the first time since 2014 that the President of the European Commission has faced such a motion. (Translated by Wenyi)
