Reference Message Network reported on May 6th according to a report from the Russian Satellite Communications Agency on May 5th. Ajit Pai, former chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, stated in a signed article for The Wall Street Journal that the United States was inadequately prepared in its bid to take the lead in the application of fifth-generation mobile communication technology (5G) against China.

The official, who led the agency during Trump's first presidential term from 2017 to 2021, wrote: "The U.S. has lost its leading position in the 5G field, while China is taking the lead." He believed that Washington was at a disadvantage and unprepared to respond to "China's efforts to win the future of wireless communications." He added that China would soon have four times as much mid-band commercial frequency for 5G as the United States. He also noted that Beijing accelerated its efforts to achieve dominance in the wireless communications sector.

Despite this, the former official believes that the U.S. still has time to change the current situation. To do so, Washington needs to re-prioritize the promotion of wireless communication development like its competitors.

It was reported that by the end of 2024, China had built the world's largest 5G network with 4.25 million base stations, and the number of 5G mobile phone users exceeded one billion. Compared to 4G, the fifth-generation communication technology is faster and has lower signal transmission latency. Additionally, compared to LTE networks, 5G networks can connect more devices.
