JGSDF is testing the Rheinmetall's Mission Master SP UGV. (Rheinmetall)

The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) is conducting trials of Rheinmetall's Mission Master SP and Milrem THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) to meet the requirements of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).

The Ministry stated in a social media post on October 3 that the JGSDF is evaluating the basic performance and operational procedures of two UGV platforms ordered by the Ministry in April 2024.

The Ministry added, "[The JGSDF has been strengthening its unmanned capabilities, including UGVs, which will achieve continuous operations while minimizing personnel risks through accelerated assessment of full-scale introduction.]"

This procurement aligns with a document titled "Basic Strengthening of Japan's Defense Capabilities" released by the Ministry in November 2024, which outlines the requirements for enhancing the JGSDF's unmanned capabilities.

Rheinmetall said in the Ministry's order that it will deliver three Mission Master SP UGVs to the JGSDF by January 2025, specifically for testing purposes.

Rheinmetall is supplying the UGVs in collaboration with local contractor Marubeni Aerospace, which are equipped with payload modules, including cargo, surveillance, and remote-controlled weapon stations (RCWS). Rheinmetall added that the contract also includes a long-term support and training program as well as spare parts.

Details of the contract with Milrem have not been disclosed.

The 8×8 Mission Master SP is designed to perform transport, fire support, and reconnaissance missions. The vehicle weighs 1,134 kg and has a maximum ground speed of 40 km/h. It can carry up to 1,000 kg of payload, reducing to 300 kg in amphibious operations. The UGV is powered by lithium-ion batteries.
