Arab News, September 26 - According to officials from Pakistan's Maritime Department, Pakistan is trying to promote better port and shipping plans to connect with Saudi Arabia, aiming to build itself as a "trade bridge between the Gulf countries and Central Asia to China". In maritime matters, Pakistan has proposed several maritime cooperation initiatives to Saudi Arabia, including building dedicated trade portal terminals for Saudi Arabia by relying on Karachi Port and Gwadar Port; introducing Saudi funding to expand Pakistan's national shipping company fleet and launch direct routes from Karachi to Jeddah and from Gwadar to Dammam; and establishing 20 green shipbreaking yards in Gaddani. Meanwhile, Pakistan's National Oil Company is currently examining the construction of a new commercial oil terminal in the suburbs of Karachi, which is expected to cost 300 million US dollars. On land transportation, the Pakistan Ministry of Transportation called for laying fiber optic cables along railway lines, expanding the submarine cable network, and accelerating the completion of the M-6 highway. This section is 394 kilometers long, connecting Karachi with Sukkur in the inland Sindh province. The Pakistan Ministry of Transportation proposed extending the M-10 highway to the southern Khirthar Mountains to supplement existing road infrastructure. It is reported that a joint working group consisting of the Maritime, Transport, Railways and Defense Departments will meet for the first time soon, focusing on discussing priority development projects and fundraising issues. Pakistan's Minister of Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, urged all departments to present reasonable proposals as soon as possible to attract international investment.
