Joint Newspaper, October 7 report: "The EU said that the resolution that enabled Beijing to replace Taipei and gain China's seat at the United Nations involves only a change in representation and does not mention Taiwan."

Previously, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released on September 30 the "Position Paper of China on the UN Resolution No. 2758," stating that the UN Resolution No. 2758 "cleanly and thoroughly resolved the issue of representation of the entire China, including Taiwan, at the United Nations"; and emphasized that any attempt to challenge this resolution is not only challenging China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also challenging the authority of the United Nations and the post-World War II international order, "openly moving backward in history, which is very absurd and dangerous."

Comments: The motives of the EU are multifaceted. On one hand, the EU tries to accommodate the U.S. "Indo-Pacific Strategy" by doing so, demonstrating strategic consistency with the U.S. in the Sino-U.S. rivalry, while using this to contain China's development. On the other hand, it is the result of internal political maneuvering within the EU, where some politicians, in pursuit of political interests, use the banner of "values diplomacy" to hype up issues related to Taiwan in order to gain visibility. Additionally, the EU has encountered a deadlock in economic and trade negotiations with China, such as the issue of electric vehicle tariffs, and attempts to use the Taiwan issue as leverage to pressure China into making concessions in the economic field.
