Media: Orbán will meet with the Pope on October 27
RIA Novosti, Moscow, October 25 - According to a report by "Domani", citing sources, Pope Leo XIV will receive Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the Vatican on October 27, after which Orbán will meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The report said that Orbán plans to discuss the Ukraine conflict and human rights issues with the Pope and seek support ahead of the 2026 Hungarian spring elections, following his loss in opinion polls to his closest competitor Peter Márzsa. The newspaper noted that the meeting with the Pope will take place in the morning and include a meeting with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
It is reported that in the afternoon, Orbán will meet with Meloni, and they will discuss European policy issues.
The report stated, "Maintaining relations is particularly important to avoid isolation. Although Orbán calls Hungary 'an island of peace,' the country must develop relations to protect its interests. The meeting held at the Quirinal Palace at 15:30 (16:30 Moscow time) on Monday will be considered a courtesy visit by the Prime Minister during his trip to the city to fulfill his obligations in the Vatican, and the Italian side has not made a big deal out of it."
The report pointed out that Orbán made his first visit to Rome and the Vatican after being re-elected in April 2022, where he met with former Pope Francis.
