Korean media: Kia ranks fourth in Australia, BYD surges by 196%!

On May 7th, a South Korean media "Seoul Economic Daily" published an article stating that Kia Motors sold a total of 7,307 vehicles in the Australian market in March, an increase of 3.4% year-on-year. This result contrasts sharply with the overall market decline of 0.9% during the same period.

As a result, Kia ranked fourth in total sales, just behind Toyota (20,541 units), Ford (8,232 units), and Mazda (8,000 units).

The growth in the electric vehicle segment was particularly significant. Kia sold a total of 1,611 electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, including 767 units in March. Analysts estimate that electric vehicles account for approximately 10% of total sales, and the product line strategy focusing on environmentally friendly vehicles is gradually showing results.

Meanwhile, the progress of Chinese brands such as BYD (4,811 units, 196.6%) and Great Wall Motors (4,393 units, 21.4%) was also evident. BYD's market influence expanded rapidly, growing by 196% year-on-year.

Kia has set its annual sales target at 90,000 units this year. The cumulative sales in the first quarter reached 19,734 units, an increase of 4.3% year-on-year. If this trend continues, it seems likely to achieve the annual goal.

Kia plans to further accelerate its entry into the Australian market through the upcoming pickup truck "Tasman". Tasman aims for annual sales of 20,000 to 25,000 units and is expected to directly compete with main competitor models like the Toyota Hilux.

A South Korean industry insider stated, "Kia Motor has brand awareness and product competitiveness in the Australian market," and added, "If the share of pure electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles is expanded, along with the impact of the new pickup model, it may be possible to surpass Mazda and enter the top three."
