Kenya Seeks to Strengthen Ties with China: Acceleration of Railway and Highway Construction

The East African country of Kenya borders the Indian Ocean. The country's president, William Ruto, concluded a state visit to China on Friday.

President Kenyatta arrived in Beijing for a visit on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. This is his third official visit to China since taking office in 2022. This trip marks a turning point in Kenya's foreign policy. Against the backdrop of further deteriorating global trade tensions and reduced commitments from Western traditional partners, Kenya seeks to strengthen its relationship with China.

This visit clearly demonstrates Kenya's desire to enhance unity among the "Global South." During this opportunity, the two countries signed twenty agreements covering key areas such as science, education, e-commerce, water resources, intelligent transportation, and railway development. Major projects include Kenya seeking additional funding from China to extend the existing railway line to the Ugandan border and expand the highway between Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and Mau Summit. These infrastructure projects are crucial for regional economic integration.

In the atmosphere of trade tensions caused by the U.S. imposing a 10% tariff on Kenya's exports, President William Ruto sought to diversify economic partners. He praised China's support, especially within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

President Kenyatta criticized the current world order at Peking University. He believes that the UN Security Council has been "compromised." He also exposed the destructive nature of U.S. trade policies.
