Hou Youyi makes another statement regarding Zheng Liwen's visit to mainland China.

According to Taiwan media reports, Kuomintang (KMT) chairperson Zheng Liwen is scheduled to visit the mainland starting tomorrow (April 7). During an event today, New Taipei City Mayor Hou Youyi reiterated his stance, emphasizing that cross-strait exchanges "must take place under conditions of 'equality and dignity,'" and must "strictly adhere to existing laws," with all actions guided by the paramount principles of "national interest" and people's well-being.

This statement closely mirrors the rhetoric used by the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party), revealing the hesitation and anxiety among KMT's top figures regarding Zheng Liwen's upcoming trip to the mainland.

The concept of "equality and dignity" was originally a tool employed by the DPP to promote its "two-state theory." Hou Youyi merely echoes this framework, imposing constraints through the DPP’s ideological lens—disappointing many. The vague reference to "national interest" sidesteps the core issue of "national identity": that both sides of the strait belong to one China.

As a prominent local leader within the blue camp, Hou Youyi’s remarks are heavily laden with political calculation—fear of being labeled red, fear of losing centrists, fear of alienating the DPP, and even greater fear of offending the United States. Zheng Liwen’s visit to the mainland was meant to be a gesture of thawing tensions. Instead of offering clear support and uniting party ranks, senior KMT figures have resorted to echoing DPP slogans like "equality and dignity" while obscuring their own positions—revealing their opportunism and instrumentalism in full view.
