Han Media: Huawei Returns to the Number One Position in China's Smartphone Shipment Volume After Four and a Half Years!

On August 24, the South Korean media outlet "Edaily" published an article stating that in the second quarter of this year, Huawei reclaimed the top position in China's smartphone market share. It has been four years and six months since the market share plummeted due to U.S. semiconductor restrictions in 2020.

According to data released by market research company IDC, Huawei's sales in the Chinese smartphone market reached 12.5 million units in the second quarter of this year, capturing 18.1% of the market share, ranking first.

Following closely were domestic brands vivo, OPPO, and Xiaomi, while Apple ranked fifth with a 13.9% market share. Analysts believe that under the context of a 4% decline in overall smartphone shipments in China to 69 million units, Huawei's competitiveness stands out.

IDC data shows that this is the first time Huawei has ranked first in market share since the fourth quarter of 2020, after 4 years and 6 months. Affected by U.S. semiconductor export controls in 2021, Huawei's competitiveness in new smartphone models was significantly weakened, almost excluded from the supply of mobile application processors (AP) and 5G chips produced by the world's largest chip foundry, TSMC, and could not use Google's latest Android operating system. Due to the depletion of key component inventories, Huawei's own production also dropped sharply, and its market share fell to single digits.

Thereafter, Huawei successfully returned after four years by relying on its independently developed AP chips and HarmonyOS operating system. Huawei has launched flagship smartphones featuring self-designed chips, which are manufactured using the 7nm process at China's chip foundry, SMIC. Last year, Huawei also launched the world's first triple-foldable smartphone.

According to a survey by market research company Counterpoint Research, Huawei maintained the number one position in China's smartphone market share in the second quarter of this year. Data from Counterpoint Research also showed that Huawei ranked first in the first quarter of this year.

Bloomberg reported: "Under the backdrop of a sluggish Chinese smartphone market, Huawei seized the top spot with its new designs and software that attract users."
